Topic 7: Estimation Procedures

Topic 7 introduces students to the inferential statistics of making point estimates and confidence intervals. While students may be aware of the concept of margin of error, this chapter explains in greater detail the researcher's role in determining the margin of error. Students will also develop an understanding of how the sampling distribution links the sample and population distributions.

Objectives:

  1. calculate point estimates and confidence intervals for interval-ratio data
  2. calculate and point estimate and confidence intervals for nominal or ordinal level data
  3. explain the relationship between a sample distribution, sampling distribution, and population distributions

Suggested Readings:

  • Healey, Chapter 7: Estimation Procedures
  • Bennett, Chapter 5, section 3 and Chapter 8
